The Six Pollutions

The Six Pollutions to Overcome When Receiving Dharma Teachings

According to the great Sakya master Venerable Dezchung Rinpoche, there are six pollutions, or faults, to be overcome when receiving Dharma teachings:

-Pride. “I probably know as much as this Dharma teacher.”

-Disrespect. “This teacher isn’t qualified.”

-Carelessness. “Even if I don’t understand, that’s ok because it’s not really that important.”

-Distraction. Letting your mind wander.

-Mental laxity. Not exerting effort.

-Resistance. Listening with an irritated or resistant mind.
