3 brothers descended from the Celestial Realm of the Clear Light Gods.
The middle brother (Yuring) stayed and produced offspring of 5 generations until Yapang Kye. This is known as the Lineage of the Clear Light Gods.
Yapang Che’s son was Kho Barkye (“Born in the midst of enmity”).
His son, Khon Palpoche, was a minister to King Trisong Detsun. (8th century)
Khon Palpoche’s son, Khon Nagarakshita was one of the 25 main disciples of Padmasambhava and also one of the 7 Tibetan monastic probationers.
Khön Paternal Line
From Khon Palpoche, 10 generations down to the two brothers Sherab Tsultrim and Khon Konchok Gyalpo is known as the “Khon Paternal Line.”
“Sakyapas.”
Khön Konchok Gyalpo established the first Sakya temple in 1073, and from then on the lineage is known as “Sakyapas.”
So, this is known as “The Lineage of 3 Excellent Names.”

The 5 Founders:
Khön Könchok Gyalpo’s son was Sachen Kunga Nyingpo. (1)
He had 4 sons, two of whom were Sonam Tsemo (2) and Drakpa Gyaltsen. (3)
Drakpa Gyaltsen’s nephew was Sakya Pandita (4). His nephew was Chogyal Phakpa. (5)
There followed many Phodrangs (Palaces) until there was only one: Ducho labdrung.(1700’s)
Then it was split into 2:
Drolma Phodrang and Phuntshok Phodrang, which still exist today.
Sakya Subsects
Ngorpa: Founded in 1429 by Ngorchen Kunga Sangpo. (Prophesized by Lord Buddha in the Sutra of the Root of Merit and in the Sutra of Spiritually Favoring.)
Dzongpa: Founded in 1464 by Dzongpa Kunga Namgyal.
Tsarpa: Founded in the early 1500’s by Tsarchen Losal Gyatso.
